Why turquoise hydrogen will Be a game changer for the energy transition

With hydrogen being promoted as a promising energy vector for decarbonized world, low-carbon production methods are of interest to replace the current Steam-Methane-Reforming “grey” hydrogen. While existing studies focus on life-cycle-assessment green produced by water electrolysis, an alternative, which has attracted growing due much lower intensity (10–30 kWh/kgH2 < 50–60 kWh/kgH2), is turquoise pyrolysis methane. Specifically, this study conducts methane via thermal-plasma. A sensitivity analysis also conducted environmental-metric time-horizon and emissions rates. Results show that carbon-intensity using novel method 88.3–90.8% than grey Furthermore, renewable-natural-gas with feedstock percentage low 8–18% leads negative (reaching −4.09 −10.40 kgCO2e/kgH2 at 100% renewable natural gas), lowest compared grey, blue, hydrogen, making game-changer transition.
